Interested in gardening? Community? A new group in town is forming and could use your help. Consider getting involved in the Collingswood Community Garden project.
Their mission is:
I. to develop borough open space into community gardens, creating a place for Collingswood residents to work collaboratively and experience the rewards of gardening
II. to cultivate community interest in gardening by providing exposure to historical, artistic, technical and cultural aspects of horticulture
Collingswood Community Gardens is forming two committees to facilitate the development of the future Garden off of Washington Ave and is asking for volunteers to join the committees.
The Site Plan Committee will design the physical layout of the garden. Our goal is to fit approximately 40 individual plots in the space we have. Individuals with expertise in landscape architecture are especially needed although everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.
The Bylaws Committee will be responsible for developing an organizational structure for the garden, including drafting the garden’s governing bylaws that will elaborate the rules and regulations of the garden. Using existing templates from other community gardens, the committee will adopt a structure to fit the needs of our community. All interested gardeners and community members are encouraged to participate.
Initial meetings for each committee were held on October 5 (Site Plan Committee) & October 7 (Bylaws Committee) at 7 p.m. in the Library community room. We have the expectation that each committee will meet several times throughout Fall and early Winter to complete its respective task. Each committee will also present working drafts to entire Collingswood Community Gardens group to incorporate feedback and suggestions into final drafts.
Please contact David Zuzga (davidzuzga@gmail.com) and indicate if you would like to participate on either or both committees.
The group is looking to hold monthly meetings during the spring, summer and fall to organize the development of actual sites and also provide a forum for guest speakers to address the community on all things garden-related. The initial meeting an project will focus on a development framework for the initial site to be developed, just off of Washington Ave. For more information on the project, contact David Zuzga at dzuzga@sju.edu.
